1ères Week 6

Wednesday 16 December

Here are some possible answers to the questions concerning the poem . Read them carefully:

2 Who is speaking ?

An immigrant whose (dont) native langage is Spanish but who lives in the US now.

3 Focus on the repeated words and explain the meaning of the poem :

Repetition of the words « tongue » and « funny » underlines the confusion felt by bilingual people.

The words concerning border security means the experiences linked with being an immigrant

The repetition of words related to separation like « divided » « cut » show that speaking two langages can be like having two identities.

4 What is the meaning of the poem ?

The end of the poem shows that he likes his bilingualism and his double identity . He says « I like my tongue / it says who feels right »

We will go back to this chapter after Xmas holidays . For today's homework have a look at the « cahier de textes »

Corrigé du travail à faire : For today you had to answer to a last question « What does the film suggest about the arrival of the Irish in the « City of Dreams » ? p. 109 . Here is a possible answer :

The film suggests that for the Irish the hope of fulffilling /realising their dreams in New York City was crushed /destroyed when they arrived . When they discovered that immigrating to the US meant (signifiait) to fight in the war they knew that they had not found a better life. It is unfair because to be accepted as true Americans they are forced to go to war for their new country.

Contenu du cours : « Double identity » « My tongue is divided into two ».p.110

(The different meanings of the word « tongue » : 1) the part of the body used to speak. 2) langage)

Read the poem – You will find some help on p.111

Some more vocabulary : l. 5 « step on each other » (se chevaucher) – l.11 « drown » (se noyer)

You will find some work to do about it on the « cahier de textes ».

1ères Week 5

Hello, I hope you are still fine. Holidays are coming and you will be in class again in 2021.

Friday 11 December

Today your work will be lighter.
First I send you a possible answer for question 3

Focus on the song . How do the music and the lyrics work together and convey the message ?

The music is sad and melancholic and the lyrics describe the Irish fate (destin). They left Ireland for a better life but they are forced to risk their lives for their new country. The elements work together to give a feeling of despair.

You are going to read the blog again and you will answer to question 4. : What does the film suggest about the arrival of the Irish in the « City of Dreams ? »

You use your notes and you send me your answers on the « messagerie »

Have a good weekend :-)

Contenu du cours :

Here are some possible answers for your homework. Many of you didn't send me any answers .I am not completely sure that you have understood the situation so read them carefully.

1) The two images from the film show different groups who seem violent. It looks like they are going to fight . The poster slogan gives the idea that the U.S come from humble beginnings.

2 a) Some Americans welcome them as new countrymen * but some discriminate against them because they are different. One man says « I don't see Americans, I see trespassers ». He thinks that the immigrants will take their jobs but the other man tells him that immigration is the future.(* compatriotes)

b) They are signing papers to become American citizens and join the Union Army. They are going to fight in the Civil War** as Americans.(** la guerre de sécession)

They do not have a choice to obtain the American citizenship.(citoyenneté)they must fight in the war.

« The city of dreams » page 108 > How are immigrants met when they arrive ?

First look at the photos on pages 108-109. Read the legends and comments. What do they show about America ? (who ? Their attitude ? What are they going to do ? ) - Don't forget to have a look at « Help » on page 109. Answer in 3 or 4 sentences..

Week 3 Monday 30 November

Hello, I hope you are still fine and I hope you have all been able to do your homework for today (by two or alone).

Corrigé du travail à faire : Here there are some possible answers to the questions asked last week questions 4-5-6 p.107

5 Share your findings and discuss together . Explain what the American tendency is :

The « American tendency «  is Americans' forgetfulness (oubli) about their own (« own » = propre) history. They only remeber parts of the Thanksgiving story and forget that the first Europeans who immigrated to the US only survived thanks to (grâce à) the generosity of the native population, the American Indians.

6 Conclude : What's the author's opinion about Thanksgiving?(past and present)

The author thinks people don't remeber the whole story ; (« whole » entier > « the whole story » toute l'histoire) so they have forgotten the meaning (« le sens) of Thanksgiving. He also thinks that people who are against immigration should remeber their own history.
Contenu du cours :

So if you analyse the painting again( and some of you have seen that ) how are people portrayed ? (portrayed = représenté) :

The pilgrims are dressed in European clothes and are giving food to the American Indians who are sitting on the ground.. The American Indians are seen as (on les voit comme) less civilized so the arrival (l'arrivée) of the Pilgrims is considered as less harmful (nocif, mauvais) for them.

You will find on the « cahier de textes «  some work to do . You will do that work on Wednesday and send it to me on Wednesday.

Wednesday 2 December

Hello, I hope you are still safe and well .

Thanks to the ones who sent me their homework . I 'm going to finish to answer today;

Contenu du cours :The first refugees p.106-107

3 When does the scene take place ?

The scene takes place in 1620 (cf painting) at the arrival of the "Pilgrims" and then in 1621  "the first Thanksgiving" one year after.

Describe in your own words what happened .

The refugees/ immigrants arrived in a new world and were welcomed by the local population.

Identify the two groups and describe them.

The two groups are the Americans and the refugees.

The Americans are described as kind /nice and welcoming. The refugees left their country for political reasons and are described as "unprepared".

How do people refer to them ?

The Americans are usually called Native Americans / American Indians. The refugges are usually called Pilgrims.

(Pour le travail à faire voir le cahier de textes de l'ENT. )

Week 2

I send you today (just  below )some answers for the work you had to do for today (Lady Liberty's welcome)

Lady Liberty’s welcome p.104

Possible answers :

Description

Photo 1 : These people are undocumented immigrants. They are crossing the United States border unlawfully (illegaly).

Photo 2 : These people are immigrants coming from Europe. They are posing for the photographer. It was taken in the early (at the beginning of) twentieth century.

Their feelings

Photo 1 : they seem to be stressed, they must be desperate because they are endangered.

Photo 2 : They seem to be patient . They may be optimistic and hopeful because the are going to achieve(realise) their American dream.

Differences between the two situations : In the first photo they are hopeless, trying to escape poverty, they are fleeing/escaping their country . They could be caught by the border patrol whereas/while in the second photo there is no violence , they seem to be tired but they can hope they will achieve their dream.

The New Colossus p.105 :

This poem is optimistic because it offers hope for refugees . It rejects stereotypes of poor people. The message is the United States is (was) a place where anyone can start a new life.

Homework : What do you know about Thanksgiving ? Leave a comment on the forum or send me an answer(messagerie ENT) . Look at the painting : How is the first Thanksgiving described ?(messagerie ENT).
